Something to Marvel at
While rushing into the 20th street Public Library to avoid the pouring rain, I came across an article in the New York Times. The story told of a hero phenomenon sweeping the nation: ordinary people would don costumes and patrol the streets of their towns and cities in hope of making the world a safer and better place to be. The journalist describes the wide spectrum of these vigilantes (from Salt Lake City's patrolling crusaders "the Black Monday Society", to "Terrifica" a Seattle heroine dedicated to warning women in bars of the dangers that threatened them in a drunken state) as well as people's (mostly positive) reactions to this movement. Following the interviews of both these sources, the author brings readers to the conclusion that their is a rising will to protect society in all of us, and that the fancy costumes are just a means to bring out that inner yearning. All the while praising this phenomenon, the author manages to keep an objective point of view and a witty tone.
