While I was in Paris I went to go see the movie "Intouchables" with my family. At first I was reluctant to go because I didn't like the actor Omar Sy. However, while I watched, I was surprised to discover how seamlessly the director weaved comedy with a fairly serious story and topic. In the movie, Philipp, a quadriplegic uninspired by life and drained of hope, searches for an assistant to help with his care. He ends up hiring the most unfit for the job, a poor, uncultured, but yet charming Senegalese from the parisian "banlieue". With his charisma and love of life, this assistant ends up transforming Philipp's life and giving him a new will to live.
Though I found that the movie was sometimes a little unrealistic, I was profoundly marked by the friendship that builds between these two men. Its a friendship strong enough to break the law for, to lie for, to sacrifice for (it almost makes me want to cry). Furthermore, the movie was based on a true story which kind of restores your faith in the good and compassion of mankind.
This movie has been extremely successful in France because it offers a cheerful break from reality with a modern fairytale. Apparently, Nicholas Sarkozy liked it so much that he wants to invite the whole cast to lunch at the Elysee Palace.
