The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) & (2011)

I hope everyone is enjoying their vacation so far and excited for the New Year !

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is the story of a reporter, Mikael Blomkvist, that recently lost a libel case against a billionaire financier, Hans-Erik Wennerström. After Lisbeth Salander ( a computer hacker and researcher for Milton Security) did a thorough background check on Mikael Blomkvist, he then is recruited by Henrik Vanger to look for Vanger's niece Hariet Vanger, who went missing and may have been murdered . The rest of the story is Blomkvist's journey to find out what happened to Hariet.
After watching both films, I can not really say that one was better than the other, but I did prefer the Swedish depiction of Steig Larsson's book. The 2009 Swedish film was amazing, and I strongly encourage you to watch that one first in case you haven't seen the latest one yet. I did prefer Daniel Craig in the role of Mikeal Blomkvist (in the 2011 film) because he brought more life to the character, but both Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara portrayed Lisbeth Salander in a way that makes her mysterious and irresistible. Both films are rated R because of the violence and about 2 hours in a half, and both are really great movies. I really encourage you to watch at least one of them if you have not already !!!

I saw the new version yesterday. I liked it a little more than I liked the book (which was a page-turner for sure, but so badly written!). Rooney Mara is terrific, yet I can't help but think that a movie (and novel) that purports to condemn violence against women manages to exploit our fascination with it at the same time.
