For example

I saw the movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy over the weekend. I'm a big fan of John Le Carré, especially his Smiley books. I loved the PBS mini-series with Alec Guinness as Smiley. But I must say that this version, directed by Tomas Alfredson and starring Gary Oldman as Smiley, is totally satisfying. A little over two hours (compared to the 350 minute mini-series), the movie is impressionistic, rather than strictly narrative. It believes in its audiences' ability to connect the dots and expects at least some of us to remember old friends such as Connie Sachs and Ricky Tarr. The sense of dread, the certainty of men who may have lost their way and don't know it, and the moody vulnerability of master spy and cuckold George Smiley create the emotional underpinnings of a ripping good spy story.
